How would the food chain start? It is actually the plants that provide the crucial food base for carnivores. Herbivores and insects survive and thrive by feeding on these plants. They are nature's primary consumers. And they do not have to fight for their food. At the next level, however, a chaotic battle ensues — a battle between the predators that hunt and prey that are hunted. When animals die, microorganisms break them down. They become earth again, which feeds the plants. In the end, the energy that started first as plants is returned to them. |
