History:Ocean Currents
Over 200 years ago, Benjamin Franklin began to understand the nature of the seas. Practical knowledge of the course and strength of ocean currents was something of a “professional secret” amongst mariners and was only passed on by word of mouth. It was Benjamin Franklin who revealed this secret through publication of his chart. It was also through him that the name sailors had given to the main current in the Atlantic, the Gulf Stream, became commonplace.
