The 21st century marks a new, perilous era for space explorers, which may see mankind enter deep space for the first time. We are a risk-taking people. We always have been. The history of humanity is to take risks and open up new frontiers. Space will always push human ingenuity and endeavor to the very limits. Exploring space is phenomenally difficult and complex and it requires such heroic effort on everybody’s part that when it comes off well as it does most of the time, it is really hard for the public to see how hard it really is. The challenger disaster made everybody realize that space exploration is a dangerous business and it is not as routine as we thought it was.
