Thanks to an unusual surgical procedure called rotationplasty, some children who have lost legs to bone cancer are now able to enjoy unprecedented movement and flexibility; Facial disfigurement such as deformed skulls, cleft lip or cleft palate are among the severest trials children and their parents can endure. There are not only physical challenges, but the prospect of a life filled with ridicule and loneliness. Kids with disfigured faces are often unfairly placed in special education classes and the discrimination against them may not let up as they become adults.
