Basic Medicine:Kids Medicine(8)
In 1998 a young man named Robert Faye, Jr. made medical history. With the aide of a remarkable device called the functional electrical stimulation system, the 14-year-old was able to rise from his wheelchair and walk, this despite a paralyzing spinal cord injury. Robert said that in his dreams he could see himself walking. A lot of paralyzed children and young adults have similar dreams. Our first story is about a hospital in Philadelphia that is working hard to make those dreams come true. Ashlie Story is an accomplished gymnast, an enthusiastic swimmer, a popular public speaker and a tireless volunteer whose community service efforts have won her national recognition.
