Few of us can remember a time before antibiotics, when bacterial diseases like tuberculosis, syphilis and meningitis were common killers. The advent of antibiotics changed much of that. But now, doctors fear new drug-resistant bacteria could return us to a pre-antibiotic age. So we're reaching a fairly critical period. We already have some infectious that are untreatable and if more infectious become untreatable without the presence of newer antibiotics, we will have some serious public health problems.
