Heart attacks and strokes are the great killers of our time. In the industrialised world, we've been taught they are caused by too much fatty food, smoking and stress. Scientists are convinced that neither fat consumption nor other risk factors can adequately explain the fluctuating incidence of cardiovascular disease. They have associated many bacteria with arteriosclerosis –But neither herpes nor any other viral pathogen has so far been identified as a player in the deadly game of heart disease.
