In January 1975, the North Vietnamnese army took Phuoc Long. The US issued the diplomatis protest. But that was all. Confident that the US would not intervene, on 1st March, the NVA launched a major efensive. Thousands fled as the NVA moved south. Within two months, the communist forces have covered Saigon airports and moved into the Saigon. On 30th April 1975, totally overwhelmed, South Vietnam surrendered to the North. And the flag of Viet Cong flew over the presidential palace in Saigon.
