Much of southern California is what's known as a fire adapted eco-system. It may look like an idyllic setting， but this paradise is a tinderbox - just waiting for a match. And there are plenty of matches. A carelessly tossed cigarette， a lightning storm， or embers from an abandoned campfire can give life to brush fires. Fanned by hot dry winds they can burgeon out of control in minutes.
