By the end of May 1742, everything was ready for Bering's expedition. The two newly constructed ships set sail — St. Peter under the command of Vitus Bering and St. Paulo under captain Chericoff. They passed the Three Brothers' Rock, the last up post on the east coast of Russia, and headed into the uncharted waters. Three weeks later, the fog lifted; an unknown coastline could be glimpsed between the clouds. And Alaska, the great land was lying in front of them.
