History:The Russian Revolution
In 1903, the Russian Social Democratic Party split over how to bring about revolution, forming the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks led by Lenin. These revolutionaries channeled people's discontent into a political movement. World War I united the Russian people against the common enemy. It was popularly regarded as a holy crusade against the Germans. On the evening of October 6, 1917, under the cover of the darkness, the Red Guard took over key buildings and in a short time had the city under control.
