History:The Earth Skin
The atmosphere is the protective layer of the earth. It ensures stable temperatures on Earth without which life would never have been possible. It acts like the panes of a greenhouse so sunlight can reach the Earth unimpeded. In the 19th century, Teisserenc de Bort found the Earth is comprised of separate layers — a discovery that constitutes a milestone in the history of meteorology.
