History:Spectral Lines
In 1664 or thereabouts, Isaac Newton shone sunlight through a prism and discovered that the different colours of the spectrum were refracted to different degrees. The German physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer sought to determine the refraction undergone by every single colour of the spectrum and developed achromatic object lenses for telescopes. His discovery paved the way for the new science of astrophysics.
