History:The Hoover Dam
Founded only 100 years ago, the city of Las Vegas owes its current glamour to a natural disaster. In March 1905, heavy rain caused the Colorado River to flood. A torrent of mud and boulders ruptured the dams in Imperial Valley. The wild river was seen as an enemy that had to be defeated by means of technology. Herbert Hoover, by now the 31st President of the United States, urged a speedy start to build the dam. The dam project was a large-scale solution to a large-scale problem.
