Whatever the rocks were saying about the past had happened across the whole country, so began geology — the study of the earth. People, especially the scientists would begin to see the history of the earth that might be written in the rock strata. There were many strata and many have their own special connections with the extinct fossils. Rocks were saying something amazing and they were records of many lost ages of vast time in the past.
