On a geological time scale, water works quickly at wearing away the continents. If there was no other activity, our mountain ranges would soon disappear. However, there's a counteracting upward movement of rocks, produced by subterranean forces, going on at the same time. The work of water on the moving crust of the earth creates a continually changing landscape.
