Geoscience:Glaciers and Glaciation
Glaciers are made up of ice, but their formation depends on snow, lots of it. To form a glacier, the snow must undergo a change. Under the weight and pressure of all the layers, the large, delicate crystals of snow gradually change their shape and become compact, hard crystals of ice. Over time the ice will build up as more snow continues to accumulate. Scientists drill into a glacier to sample what was in the atmosphere at the time that part of the glacier formed.
