Material Chemistry:Chemical Energy
Plants and fossil fuels have chemical energy stored in them. When we bum fuels, energy is given off. The chemical reaction is exothermic, meaning heat goes out of the reaction. We can bum wood or coal in a steam train to produce movement. However, we can only use solid fuels on large engines which operate at constant load. Cars need a liquid or gaseous fuel that lets the engine stop or start instantly.
