The power of attraction is a phenomenon that people make use of in many ways. Magnetism is invisible， but it is always present. The most famous symbol of magnetism is undoubtedly the compass. But for a long time just why compass needles align themselves in a north-south direction remained a puzzle. In the 18th century， scientific research began to focus on the Earth’s magnetic field. Much of what we know about it today is due to the work of physicist and mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss.
