Bioscience:The Silence of the Gorillas
In the heart of Africa, Congo, 30,000 lowland gorillas live in this huge forest. D'odzalanational Park, 8,700 square miles and the wildlife Sanctuaire of Lossi have the largest gorilla populations with about 60 gorillas per square miles. The Lossi Sanctuaire alone is the home of 1,200 gorillas over 200 square miles. In November 2002, the Ebola virus hit the Sanctuaire. Two thirds of the gorillas from this area disappeared, and in the surrounding villages, Ebola killed 130 people. This was a terrible event.
