At the very beginning of the program， the director of the Fuji Bamboo Garden， Harutsugu Kashiwagi discovers that bamboos flower. One by one， the flowering bamboos start to wither. The scientists start to do research on whether the flowering of bamboo is the cause of death because most bamboos die after flowering. Finally they find out that bamboos follow the very regular periodicity of flowering.
