Bioscience:Genetic Transfer
Human beings, along with other complex life forms, transmit their genes only to subsequent generations. Microbes do this, too. But in addition, they have another extraordinary ability that is a far more powerful transmitter of genetic traits. Microbes can pass their genes not only to their offspring, but also laterally to other microbes of the same generation. This is known as horizontal gene transmission and it's a trait that really sets the microbes apart from multi-celled life. In this program, we shall talk about the microbial genetic recombination. And we shall also learn how humans have harnessed these mechanisms and applied them for the benefit of all of us.
