Bioscience:Microbes and Human Diseases
In May 1993, in a rural community of New Mexico, an unknown microbial killer swiftly claimed six lives in one week and spreaded throughout the southwest of the United States. The scientists looked for all the bacterial agents, the viral agents, mycoplasma, fungi and finally identified this microbe, a Hantavirus, as the dangerous killer. However, the direct reason caused Hantavirus was the El Nino phenomenon. Associated with the English Sweating Sickness, the scientists realized that the balance in ecosystem will influence the balance between humanity and microbes. Understanding the relationship among humanity, microbes and the environment is a scientific challenge for the coming decades.
