Bioscience:Life in the Balance
After sixty million years on Earth, the rhinoceros is on the verge of extinction. Soon elephants may exist only in zoos of protected areas. Half of all primate species are now rare or endangered. Despite heroic efforts many of the world's wild creatures are doomed. The loss of species is now the same as when the great dinosaurs become extinct. Will these creatures become the dinosaurs of our time? Today much of the living world is poised on the threshold of extinction. On this fragile planet, life itself may hang in the balance.
