For centuries' isolation, disease, feuds and disasters limited variation in Iceland's gene pool. In 1995, more people left the country than came to it, although lately there's been a small influx. But Iceland's small population is yielding large genetic returns. Finding abnormal disease-causing genes appears to be easier in a country whose population has such genetic similarity.
