Germany's great poet Goehte described it as "the most perfect thing the earth has brought forth in our clime". In many cultures, the rose is seen as a gift of the gods. But where there are gods, the devil is not far away. The rose's "devilish" side is its seductive power — the rose as a symbol of prostitution and vice.
