It rises proudly and majestically， radiant in all its glory — the sunflower. In the western hemisphere， it has 5，000 years of history as a cultivated plant and a religous symbol. The sunflower came to Europe from America with Columbus， but it's only been grown extensively since the late 19th century. Nearly everywhere in the world， the word "sun" is part of its name.
