In this program， scientists are investigating basic processes on the seabed. At the geological hot spots where the oceanic plate is pushing its way under the American continent， the researchers are hoping to discover what liquids and gases are being forced out of the seabed， how this is associated with earthquakes or volcanic eruptions and how much methane — a damaging greenhouse gas — is escaping from the sea into the atmosphere.
