By the first decade of the 16th century, Portuguese navigators have greatly extended geographic knowledge. Portuguese maps, sailing directions show impressive accuracy. And detailed sailing directions were handed on to successive voyagers. Returning from long oceanic voyages, the ships sailed past the most distinctive Lisbon's monuments — the Tower of Borlem, which was built as a fortress to defend Lisbon harbour from pirates' attacks.
