Chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred between atoms, ions or molecules are called redox reactions because they involve the opposite processes of reduction and oxidation. Redox reactions can be spontaneous. Electrochemical reactions like this one which can generate electric current. Or they can be forced reactions called electrolytic where an electric current must be applied to force the products to form.
