Environment:Disasters: Learning from the Past
In 1989, a supertanker with thousands of tons of oil struck Bligh Reef and immediately polluted the wide sea waters in Alaska surfaced by many floating ices. The consequences of the America's worst ever tanker disaster was catastrophic. At least a quarter of million sea birds died. A lot of sea otters were nearly killed. The coastline was covered in oil and thousands of kilometers suffered some pollution. People tried anything in saving the animals and cleaning the oil land. Ten years later, the environmental consequences remain. Now the U.S. government learned from this lesson and imposed tougher standards on oil transportation to protect seas and coasts from oil spillage.
