Environment:Thirsty Planet(6)
There are 1.1 billion people worldwide without access to clean drinking water, and 2.4 billion people — forty percent of the world's population — who don't have access to adequate sanitation services. Even now, half of the world's people wash in polluted rivers or watering holes. For half of the global population, toilets are a luxury. Half lack safe drinking water. People who drink polluted water become ill; many die from cholera, typhus, worms or poisoning. But the worst killer is diarrhoea, especially among children under five. The United Nations estimates that, by the middle of the 21st century, between two billion and seven billion people will lack water, which is a horrifying vision.
