The arch's strength lies in its shape， and over the years it has proved one of the most reliable forms of construction known to man. In this programme， we travel to Cologne cathedral to explore the Gothic art and to Hamburg， to see how， using modern materials， arches have evolved. But we start with the civilisation who were the first to really exploit the concept of the arch on a large scale - the Romans.
