Advertising works by creating an emotional need inside the viewer — message receiver's head. This may be a real need, or it may simply be our desire to fit in with a peer group. This need is not as definite as a physical need as defined in economic terms. Advertising also works by presenting the case for the product in a way that the target market will recognise as fulfilling their emotional need. Ususally, ads sell a product on the basis of the product's unique selling proposition.
