About this video

Technology:Bionic Technology(8)Butterfly

The colorful lights reflected by butterflies fascinate the scientists. Observed through electron microscope, scientists have found out that the squamas on each wing have some tiny multilayer structures, which control the way light expresses and reflects. The wings and squamas of butterflies are actually joined by continuous multilayer epidermis, quite like our fingernails. This periodic 3D structure changes and controls the way light moves. Scientists are interested in how ants manage to sort their brooding because they'd like to exploit those ideas and put them on robots.
