Society works smoothly because we all obey rules on how to behave. One way for a society to make decisions is by choosing people who can be our leaders, and who can make the decisions for us so that we have all the services we need. That is where government comes in. There are three levels of government in Australia: federal, state and local government. The main difference is that usually the federal government provides the money, and the state government then uses the money to provide the services.
