Bioscience:Unseen Life on Earth — Metabolism
No matter what the habitat a microorganism may call home, all microbes are performing one basic life process, a process we all must perform to survive and grow: metabolism. Metabolism refers to the thousands of chemical reactions and physical workings of the cell. It is the flow of matter and energy. As different as these organisms are and as varied the means of metbolism, all living organisms have the same goals: to make and use energy. The instructions for new generations and all the metabolic activities for all forms of life on planet Earth are passed along through DNA.
